When we rebuilt Room A last winter, we had one rule: every piece of gear has to earn its place on a record. Here is what made the cut and why it matters to the artists who record with us.
The console
Our 32-channel console is the heart of the room. Its preamps add a gentle weight to drums and bass that we have never been able to recreate in software, so most sessions run through it on the way in.
Tape, when it helps
A two-inch tape machine sits in the corner for bands who want it. We print drums to tape for warmth and transient control, then fly everything back into the computer for editing.
The microphone locker
From ribbon mics for guitar cabinets to tube condensers for vocals, the locker gives engineers options without endless shoot-outs. We keep the list short and the maintenance obsessive.
